How to play Crossword

Crossword is the classic word puzzle with a brand-new grid every game. Each numbered square starts a word that runs across or down, and the clue for it sits above the board. Where two words cross they share a letter, which helps you check your answers. Pick Easy for everyday words, Classic for a bigger grid, Expert for harder vocabulary, or the Daily puzzle that is the same for everyone today. You score points for every word, a bonus for finishing quickly and another for solving with no help at all.

• Click or tap a square to select it; tap it again to switch between Across and Down
• Type letters (or use the on-screen keys on a phone); Backspace deletes
• Arrow keys move; Tab / Shift+Tab jump to the next or previous clue; Space turns the word
• Check, Hint (one letter) and Word reveal help, at a cost to your score

Tips for a higher score

• Start with the short words and the clues you are sure about; every letter you place makes the crossing words easier.
• Use the crossing words. If a long answer will not come, solve the words that cross it first and the letters will appear.
• Count the squares: the number in brackets after each clue is the length of the answer.
• Press Tab to jump to the next clue, and Space to turn from Across to Down on the square you are on.
• Use Check only when you are truly stuck, since each check and every revealed letter costs points and ends the no-help bonus.
• On a phone, go full screen so the grid and the on-screen keys both fit comfortably.
