How to play Chess
Chess is the classic strategy game for two players, here against a computer opponent. It follows the full rules: every piece moves in its own way, pawns can capture en passant and promote on the last row, kings can castle, and the game ends in checkmate, stalemate or a draw. Choose Easy, Medium or Hard, and play as White or Black. Your score rewards a win most, with extra points for captured material, faster checkmates and harder levels.
- Tap a piece, then tap a highlighted square to move it
- Tap a pawn's last square, then choose the piece to promote to
- RESIGN (tap twice) to give up the game
- Space / Enter: start or play again
Tips for a higher score
- Control the centre early with your pawns and bring your knights and bishops out before moving the queen.
- Castle in the first ten moves to tuck your king away and bring a rook into the game.
- Before every move, check what the computer's last move attacks, and make sure none of your pieces are left hanging.
- Trade pieces when you are ahead in material; fewer pieces mean fewer tricks for your opponent.
- A pawn that reaches the last row becomes a queen in most games, so push passed pawns when the way is clear.
- Start on Easy to learn the rules, then move up. Hard thinks several moves ahead and punishes loose pieces.
